Daily Delight Devotional – Thursday, September 7 2023

And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.

The primary purpose of Christian worship is not to be informed about God but to have fellowship with God. Jesus commended Mary for the part she had chosen who drew closer to Him.

The primary purpose of the only repeated New Testament sacrament is that you continually draw near to Him in the closet of spiritual communion at the Lord’s Table. The primary purpose of His daily visit to your home is not to hear your complaints, nor even to hear your requests. He knows what you need before you ask Him.

Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.

– Psalms 37:4

The primary purpose of His daily presence with you is that you sit at His feet, making Him your closest friend. The primary reason why God created human beings was for fellowship. God’s first relationship to Adam and Eve in the Garden was that of fellowship. God’s relation to Enoch is only briefly mentioned in Scripture but Enoch’s fellowship with God must have been an unusual communion. Enoch was the first person really to commune with God.

Measure your life by your communion with God. That life is greatest in the sight of God that means most to God. Measure your life by the closeness of your communion with Christ. You can become great in the sight of God by living closely to the heart of God. That is why God was so pleased with Abraham His friend. David the shepherd boy, Mary the hearted, John the beloved and many others. You can bring more joy to the heart of God in communion than in any other way.

Insight: The basis of it all was a life of amazing communion with Jesus.

Prayer: Father, help me to always commune with you daily in the name of Jesus.
