Have you found honey? Eat only as much as you need, lest you be filled with it and vomit.

– Proverbs 25:16, NKJV

We live in a world filled with fast-paced living and convenience foods. The concept of mindful eating offers a refreshing perspective on nourishing our bodies with intentionality and awareness. As followers of Christ, we are called to honour God with every aspect of our lives, including our eating habits.

Mindful eating is about more than just what we eat; it’s about how we eat and the attitude we bring to the table. Instead of mindlessly consuming food out of habit or convenience, mindful eating encourages us to slow down and pay attention to our body’s hunger and satisfaction cues.

Apostle Paul was very specific about two eating habits as works of the flesh – gluttony and drunkenness – excessive indulgence in food and drink (Galatians 5:21-23). Not only that, the book of Proverbs and other scripture is full of warnings and instructions against gluttonous attitudes and tendencies. Rather than give in to these desires, we can guard our hearts and cultivate self-control and discipline instead.

When we approach food with intentionality, we acknowledge God’s provision and goodness in our lives. Not only that we secure our bodies and spirits from sin and the consequences that such eating habits bring.

As we strive to honour God with our eating habits, let us embrace the practice of mindful eating as a means of nourishing our bodies and spirits. Saying “no” to anything in excess is a spiritual virtue.

Insight: By cultivating an awareness of our eating habits, we can make healthier choices that nourish our bodies and honour God.

Prayer: Father, help me that my eating habits will reflect my desire to glorify You in all that I do in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading: Job 24-28
