Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them.
– Psalms 111:2, NKJV
The Bible, which is the Word of God, reveals to us who God is. We see from God’s perspective how things came to be and how through words of faith, life became expressed. In other words, faith provides us access to a visible world created from unseen things. (Hebrews 11:3)
Science, however, seems to argue a lot and this is where the Bible stands as a bridge between the two. Galileo Galilei said, “God is known by nature in his works, and by doctrine in his revealed word.” This means that science has a lot more to tell us about God by virtue of the things we see. Our text today encourages us in the study of God’s works.
As Christians, we affirm that the Bible is the inspired Word of God and the final authority for matters of faith and practice. However, this does not mean that faith should blunt our desire to make observations about the world or to try to understand how the world works. On the contrary, the Bible encourages us to explore the intricacies of creation and to marvel at the handiwork of God.
Science and faith are not mutually exclusive; rather, they often intersect and complement each other in profound ways. While science seeks to understand the natural world through empirical evidence and experimentation, faith provides a framework for understanding the deeper meaning and purpose behind the natural order. Let us recognize that the pursuit of knowledge is ultimately a pursuit of God Himself, for in Him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Colossians 2:3)
Insight: As we hold fast to the truth of Scripture, science through the mirror of the Scriptures can lead us to a deeper appreciation of the mysteries of God and His creation.
Prayer: Lord, we thank You for the wonders of Your creation and for the gift of science that allows us to explore and understand Your marvellous works.
