Daily Delight Devotional – Thursday, June 20, 2024
So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.
– James 1:19, NKJV
In yesterday’s devotional, I mentioned how building relationships through effective communication is key. A good leader builds their communication skill because effective communication is essential for leadership and personal growth. Active listening and thoughtful speech are skills that are learned and developed.
And that is because genuine communication starts with listening. Pay attention to what others are saying without interrupting. Show that you value their perspectives by responding thoughtfully and asking clarifying questions. Our Lord Jesus remains a perfect example of this. And when it is your turn to speak, be clear and concise. Avoid jargon and big vocabulary. Ensure your message is easily understood. Use simple language and straightforward examples to communicate your ideas and messages effectively.
Communication isn’t just about words. Be mindful of your body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice. These non-verbal cues can reinforce or contradict your words, so use them to support your message. Jesus stooped to write on the ground in John 8 to reinforce His stance of giving second chances when an adulterous woman was brought to Him.
Allow me to include getting feedback. Constructive feedback is important for exponential growth. Learn to give and receive feedback graciously, using it as an opportunity for improvement (Colossians 4:6). Approach feedback with humility and a willingness to learn.
Insight: Building effective communication skills involves active listening, clear conveyance, and sensitive interactions.
Prayer: Father, as I engage in daily communications, let my words and actions reflect Your wisdom and love.
