A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
– John 13:34, NKJV
The commandment to love one another from our Master Jesus is foundational to our faith. This love is not just a superficial affection but a profound, Christ-like love that reflects His love for us. As mentioned yesterday, it is unconditional love and we are expected to pattern our lives just as God showed us love for us.
This commandment is not burdensome. Jesus lived out His life sacrificially out of love for us, including those not yet born. We are also encouraged to live a life of sacrifice by putting other people’s needs above ours. God’s love for us is not transactional. And this is why the Apostle John said in 1 John 3 to love just as He laid His life for us, expecting nothing in return.
Many Christians are entrapped with their feelings and may want to succumb to the nature of tit for tat. Our love for one another should surpass the standards laid out by the world. It should also include letting go of grudges and every form of bitterness. This is a reminder of what the Apostle Paul said that love keeps no record of wrong (1 Corinthians 13:5)
Insight: As Jesus loved us, so we are called to love one another.
Prayer: Lord, help me to love others as You have loved me.
