This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
– Joshua 1:8, NKJV
Meditating on God’s word may sound as a cliche to many believers but it is a powerful practice that leads to a deeper understanding and application of Scripture. God’s word is an important aspect of our faith. It provides the anchor for what we believe in, who we believe in, and how we should live our lives.
This starts by understanding the Word of God. Ponder over the scripture you read to grasp the full significance of what God is trying to say. Reflect on the meaning of what scripture says and see how it applies to daily living. Meditation is not about head knowledge but heart knowledge and that means you need to internalize God’s Word. When we do this, it becomes part of our thoughts and actions.
To meditate on God’s Word, devote time and schedule for reading the Bible. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal His counsel to you as you meditate. Reflect and ponder on what you have read. Commit key verses to memory. This allows the Word of God to shape your thoughts and actions throughout the day. And lastly, write down your reflections, insights, and how you can apply the verse to your life.
A benefit of this is that it promotes spiritual maturity. Our relationship with God becomes strengthened. We can discern what God’s will is and that is in addition to discerning good or bad and the next steps to take. Meditation on God’s word opens our hearts to God’s peace. We can center our minds on God’s truth, providing clarity and direction amidst the noise and chaos of daily life.
