Therefore, putting away lying, ‘Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,’ for we are members of one another.
– Ephesians 4:25, NKJV
One of the hallmarks of a true believer is upholding honesty and truthfulness in every interaction – with a fellow believer or an unbeliever. It is a fundamental Christian character that glorifies God. Upholding these virtues allows us to grow meaningful and trustworthy relationships. When we are truthful, people can rely on our words and actions.
Honesty and truthfulness are also important in promoting unity within the body of Christ. The Apostle Paul said that being members of the same body, it would be odd not to speak truth to one another. The harmony Jesus wants of the Church and which our immediate community sees is pivotal. The dishonesty of Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5) and the response of the Holy Spirit informs us that God himself detests it. When we are truthful, it frees us from the burden of guilt. We can be confident that we have acted rightly and can come boldly to God’s presence (1 John 3:21).
As children of God, let us commit to speaking the truth always, especially when it is not convenient. Avoid falsehood, and steer clear of engaging in gossip. Let your words be full of grace and truth (Colossians 4:6). Commit yourself to God’s hands and ask Him to reveal any areas where you might be falling short and to help you grow in integrity.
Insight: Honesty and truthfulness are essential for building trust, promoting unity, and reflecting God’s character in our interactions.
Prayer: Lord, help me to be a person of truth and honesty in all my interactions.
