Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

– Matthew 5:3-5, NKJV

Jesus opens His longest sermon ever recorded by sharing the blessed attitudes of the hearts of those who belong to the Kingdom of God, a heart transformed by God that aligns with the Kingdom value system. Many Christians today don’t see the rich culture recorded in these teachings. Many people miss the fact that they are not lifestyles of perfect people but of a people growing into perfection. Jesus wants us to live this kind of life.

A person who is poor in spirit is someone who recognizes that they are not knowledgeable or independent without God. God is the abundance of their lifestyle. Without Him, nothing is truly worthwhile. Such a person seeks God. It is an attitude of humility demanding God’s grace and mercy.

The next value system is about those who mourn. This is an attribute of a people who are grieved of sin – of theirs and those around them. This kind of mourning seeks repentance. It elicits a thirst for a relationship with God. Such a person depends on God to comfort their soul and grant them joy. A people who mourn desire that everyone around them come to the saving knowledge of Christ Jesus.

And lastly today, Jesus referred to the meek. The meek will inherit the earth. It looks awkward, right? And that’s because meekness is most times seen as weakness. The meek are gentle, patient, and humble, trusting in God rather than asserting their own rights. Jesus promises that the meek will inherit the earth, signifying that true power and inheritance come from God’s grace, not human effort.

Insight: Jesus wants us to show these blessed attitudes (Beatitudes) as they are foundational to a blessed life in the kingdom of our God.

Prayer: Lord, transform my heart to reflect Your kingdom values and lead me into Your abundant blessings.
