Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
– Matthew 5:16, NKJV
Jesus calls us to enhance and illuminate the world as His followers. Using two powerful metaphors — salt and light — He illustrates our responsibility to positively influence and impact those around us. (Matthew 5:13-16)
Salt is essential for adding flavor to food. Therefore, as the salt of the earth, Christians are called to enhance the world by embodying Christ’s love, righteousness, and truth. Again, salt preserves food. We are called to prevent moral decay by standing firm in our values and influencing others through our integrity and godly conduct. If we lose our distinctiveness and blend into the world, we become ineffective, just as salt that has lost its flavor.
Jesus also called us the light of the world. Light dispels darkness and reveals what is hidden. Light also helps provide direction and illuminates the environment. Our responsibility as light of the world is to shine His truth and love in a world often overshadowed by sin and confusion. Our lives should be a beacon, guiding others toward Christ. By living out our faith openly and authentically, we can illuminate the path to God for those around us.
Light is visible. Hence, we should be visible. Don’t hide your faith. Live it out boldly. Let your actions and words reflect Jesus. Jesus said when we act as salt and light, we not only enhance and illuminate but others will be drawn to God.
Insight: Our role as Christians is to enhance and illuminate the world with God’s love and truth.
Prayer: Lord, help me to enhance and illuminate the world to show my distinctiveness as your child.
