Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
– Matthew 5:23-24, NKJV
Jesus teaches us on how to handle anger and resentment. It is absurd to know that many Christians find themselves under the weight of anger and resentment for years. This becomes a burden on their hearts and a stumbling block on their spiritual journey with God. While the law prohibits murder, our Lord Jesus teaches that even harbouring anger and contempt toward others puts us in danger of judgment. This is why we need to resolve anger and seek reconciliation.
Anger, when left unchecked, can lead to bitterness, resentment, and even violence. Jesus warns that anger itself, not just the actions it may lead to, is subject to God’s judgment. Jesus illustrates the urgency of reconciliation by instructing us to prioritize mending relationships over religious rituals like worship, giving, or even, coming to Church.
Before offering our gifts to God, we must first seek to reconcile with those we have wronged or those who have something against us. This emphasizes the instruction in the book of Hebrews to follow peace with all men (Hebrews 12:14, Romans 12:18) and highlights the importance of living in harmony with others and maintaining pure hearts.
From today, be self-aware. Know when you are angry and why. Approach the person with whom you have a conflict. Seek forgiveness and be willing to forgive those who have wronged you. Holding onto grudges hinders your spiritual growth and peace. Above all, depend on God’s Spirit to help you in your communications and relationships.
Insight: Our Lord Jesus calls us to prioritize relationships. This ensures we live in peace with others removing any hindrance that may come our way through our relationships.
Prayer: Lord, help me that my relationships will reflect Your love and peace.
