Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?
– Matthew 6:25, NKJV
As humans, we are always concerned for our needs, especially material needs. Jesus addresses this concern and encourages us to trust God’s provision. As difficult as that may sound, no amount of worry can change the situation of things. The common saying, “If wishes were horses, beggars will ride” underscores the importance of work to get what we need. However, Jesus said, God knows what you need.
Worry can consume our thoughts and rob us of peace. Jesus points out that worry does not add any value to our lives; instead, it distracts us from trusting in God’s faithfulness and care. As much as work is important and hard work is an important virtue, we need to learn to trust in God’s blessings as He blesses in manifold what we have or what efforts we have put in. We only need to trust Him.
Jesus goes on to use examples from nature to illustrate God’s provision. He points to the birds of the air, which neither sow nor reap, yet are fed by our Heavenly Father. He also mentions the lilies of the field, which grow beautifully without labouring for their beauty. If God cares for the birds and the flowers, how much more will He care for us, His children? (vs. 26-29)
Jesus ends by telling us emphatically that God knows all these things. A lot of people in the world are stuck in the pursuit of happiness. Jesus wants us to have a better focus and perspective. Our focus should be aligned to God and His Kingdom rather than the pursuit of material things because He will take care of those needs for us. It’s an assurance we receive when we prioritize our relationship with God and align our lives with His will.
Insight: Trusting in God’s provision frees us from the burden of worry and allows us to focus on our relationship with Him and His kingdom.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, free me from worry and fill me with peace, knowing that You are always faithful to provide for my needs.
