And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the Lord, which he commanded them not.
– Leviticus 10:1, KJV
These men were priests. It was their duty to offer offerings to the Lord every day. Some of these sacrifices involved killing an animal; others involved offering vegetable sacrifices or incense offerings. Unfortunately, Nadab and Abihu decided to try a different kind of fire. They brought strange fire into the Tabernacle. They had done with sanctified fire many times before and then decided, “We are now going to worship the Lord.” They brought in coals from another fire into the Tabernacle. As they worshipped the Lord with their censers filled with strange fire, fire came out from the inner part of the Tabernacle and killed them instantly. Nadab and Abihu’s sins involved disobeying God’s specific instructions and they offered God the sacrifice of disobedience.
Beware to think you know better than God or you do it in your way. Strange fire is changing the clear commands of God into something that seems more reasonable to you. In essence, strange fire is disobedience. If you demand from people more than God demands from them, you are offering a strange fire. When you are living a sinful life and you are still jumping on the altar, you are offering a strange fire.
Insight: When you offer “strange fire” to God, you are inviting the judgement of God upon you and your family.
Prayer: Father, deliver me from offering strange fire to you in the name of Jesus.
