Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.
– Psalm 119:11, NKJV
One of the powerful spiritual disciplines that offers great benefits is committing God’s Word to heart. The Psalmist in our text said that committing God’s word to heart prevents one from sinning against God. When Jesus was in the wilderness, tempted by the devil, His response was a counter from the pages of Scripture He had committed to memory. God’s word provides us the strength and truth to stand firm against the lies of the enemy of our soul.
Not only that, but when you commit God’s Word to heart, you can navigate life’s challenges and make good decisions that align with God’s Word. Ezra, the Scribe understood that they had derailed from God’s purpose because he committed to God’s word and made it a nationwide practice. The Holy Spirit helps us when we need direction by bringing relevant verses to mind. However, this only happens when we commit ourselves to the Word of God. God told Joshua that he must ensure the Word of God becomes a part of Him as this is a guarantee of good success (Joshua 1:8).
In addition, God’s word in your heart allows you to confidently share your faith with others. You cannot share what you don’t have. But with God’s word committed to memory, you can answer questions and provide biblically accurate truths in conversations.
How do you commit God’s word to heart? You start small. You don’t need to take up a large part of the scripture. Work your way up from shorter verses to longer ones. A regular and consistent study of the scripture helps you. Also, make the Word a part of your daily life. Carry a Bible with you. You could also have a Bible app and study guide on your devices for ease of reference wherever you are. As you make the Word a part of your daily life, it becomes a part of you.
Insight: Committing God’s Word to heart equips us with the spiritual tools needed to navigate life’s challenges, resist temptation, and grow closer to God.
Prayer: Lord, help me to hide Your Word in my heart. Give me the discipline and desire to dedicate myself to Your Word.
