He who has a slack hand becomes poor, but the hand of the diligent makes rich. He who gathers in summer is a wise son; he who sleeps in harvest is a son who causes shame.

Discipline and diligence are indispensable virtues on the journey to success and prosperity. Those who cultivate habits of hard work, perseverance, and self-control are destined to reap the fruits of their labour. Conversely, laziness and procrastination lead to poverty and shame.

There’s a song from one of my children’s animated shows that tells of a grasshopper who lounges around playing in summer while ants are busy gathering food. When winter comes, the grasshopper has nothing to fall on but to plead with the ants who have worked through the summer to provide food for themselves. The hand of the diligent is guided by discipline and perseverance. It is like a wise son who gathers in summer, preparing for the seasons ahead.

However, the slack hand, devoid of diligence and self-discipline, leads to poverty and shame. Success and prosperity are not accidental; they are the result of disciplined effort and diligent pursuit of one’s goals. When you work at the required time, you will be sure of a great harvest at the expected time. By embracing discipline and diligence, we position ourselves for success and prosperity in every area of our lives.

Prayer: Abba Father, grant me the strength and perseverance to work diligently and with self-control, knowing that success and prosperity come from You. Amen.
