Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
– James 4:10
Humility is one of the beautiful and costly paradoxes of the spiritual life. You are truly spiritually alive when you are most truly dead and crucified with Christ. You will fully and eternally gain your life when you most deliberately lavishly, and joyfully give it to God.
Every Christian should be known for Spirit-filled humility. Measure or evaluate your humility by your sense of unworthiness of God’s goodness and grace. If you are truly humble, you will be constantly amazed that God is so good and gracious to you. God has already proved His love to you in numerous ways but you do not take this for granted.
The spiritually humble person is constantly aware of how indebted he is to God. Evaluate your humility by your sense of dependence upon God. Jesus reminded us that apart from Him we can do nothing; He is the vine and we are the branches (John 15:5) What can the branch do without the vine?
When you are great in humility, you are constantly aware that you are totally dependent upon God. The more godly you become, the more gladly, completely and constantly you rely on God. Moses pointed out that God tests and proves us by humbling us (Deuteronomy 8:2).
Measure your humility by your hunger for Jesus to get ever more glory, by your burning desire that His name be exalted. The deeper your humility, the more God can use you. Holy total submission to God and holy humility make you great in the sight of God.
Insight: Evaluate your life, not by your position, not by your reputation, not by the kind words and praise that you receive but by your happy and holy humility.
Prayer: Father, I receive the grace of humility in order to scale through and become a high flyer in life and ministry in Jesus’ name.
