But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
– James 1:25, KJV
God pours out His blessings on those who are eager and active in obedience, those who welcome new light, new guidance, and new opportunities to bring glory to God. Many Christians are dry in their souls and fruitless in ministry because they are so disobedient in practical matters like tithing, or disciplining their lives to find time for prayer (Malachi 3:10).
Obedience is the secret of all miracles as well as the measure of all spirituality. Evaluate how much you love God by how instantly and completely you obey Him in the smallest of details. You are not truly obedient to God if only you walk partly in God’s light. When you choose what you will obey and what you will ignore because you want your way. Measure how you yield and your consecration to God by how totally you obey and how faithfully you continue your obedience until God’s goal is achieved.
Obey God out of love, out of an eager desire to please Him and give Him joy. Evaluate your obedience by your motive. God values your willing obedience more than your grudging obedience. God rewards your joyful obedience more than your resentful obedience. Measure your obedience by your faithfulness in perseverance and by your unwillingness to give up even when discouragement comes.
Insight: To obey is better than formal worship or to give sacrificially. All religious activities or ceremonies are valueless without obedience.
Prayer: Father, let Christ reign in me as Lord of my life and help me to be obedient to him daily in Jesus’ name.
