Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord.
Acts 11:23 (KJV)
Barnabas, after witnessing the grace of God in action, encouraged the people to draw closer to God. It’s common for individuals to become enamoured with God’s power and blessings and yet gradually drift away from cultivating their relationship with Him. Such experiences can lead to complacency, as people rely on past victories and miracles rather than nurturing their spiritual connection with God.
In light of this, Barnabas wisely urged the people to cleave or cling tightly to the Lord. It’s vital for believers to maintain their spiritual zeal and devotion to God even after experiencing His grace and favour. This entails continuing in prayer, fasting, and the study of God’s Word, as well as engaging in worship, evangelism, and teaching.
Cleaving to the Lord with the purpose of heart means being intentionally committed to deepening your relationship with God. This commitment enables you to stay closely attached to Him, maintaining a vibrant connection that keeps you from drifting away.
Insight: Remain dedicated to prayer, fasting, Bible study, and other spiritual disciplines to draw closer to God and guard against spiritual complacency.
Prayer: Father, empower me to remain dedicated to prayer, fasting, and studying Your Word so I may continue to grow closer to You, in Jesus’ name.
