Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.
– Nehemiah 8:10, NKJV
A lot of people want to be joyful. Many can contend that it is not possible to have joy in every season. But do you know that joy is more than just happiness or a fleeting emotion? We are used to the emotional happiness tied to favourable circumstances. We call it joy. That is true. However, the Bible kind of joy is a deep, abiding sense of peace and contentment that flows from one’s relationship with God. It is not dependent on external conditions. It is not derived from outcomes of desired results but is rooted in the unchanging nature of God and His promises.
This life will bring seasons of difficulty and trial. But because our source of joy is the Lord, we have access to a joy that goes beyond pain, grief, or frustration. Nehemiah reminded the people of Israel that despite their challenges, “the joy of the Lord” would be their strength. This joy sustains us and helps us persevere, no matter what we face. The Psalmist also reminds us, “In Your presence is fullness of joy.” Psalm 16:11. When we draw close to God, He fills us with a joy that is unwavering, regardless of what is happening around us. We can be strengthened and empowered. It gives us the resilience to endure challenges and the courage to face uncertainties. This joy is a fruit of the Spirit, meaning it grows as we remain connected to God, allowing Him, through the Holy Spirit to produce this powerful fruit in our lives.
Insight: The God-kind of joy transcends all seasons of life.
Prayer: Lord, fill my heart with Your joy that sustains me in every season.
