And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
– Ephesians 4:32, NKJV
Love and forgiveness are essential in the life of a believer. Forgiveness is a powerful expression of God’s love that reflects the nature of Christ and brings healing to relationships. Jesus demonstrated the ultimate act of love and forgiveness by sacrificing Himself for our sins. He forgave those who crucified Him, showing that true love encompasses the willingness to forgive even the greatest wrongs.
God commands us to love and forgive. It is also a prerequisite to being forgiven by God. Holding onto grudges goes against God’s nature and His instructions for us. What forgiveness does is it restores broken relationships and engender peace. We release bitterness and resentment when we forgive, allowing God’s love to mend our hearts.
Forgiveness not only benefits the forgiven but also frees the forgiver from the chains of anger and bitterness. Imagine carrying the burden of the offense done against you. It restricts progress! But when we forgive, we experience God’s peace and joy.
Insight: Love and forgiveness are inseparable. You are unable to love if you don’t forgive and you will be unable to forgive if you don’t have God’s love.
Prayer: Lord, help me to love as You love and to forgive as You forgive.
