For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.
– Galatians 1:10, NKJV
Our generation is dominated by social media, and the culture of comparison has become pervasive, leading many to measure their worth and success against the carefully curated images of others. The constant barrage of images, highlight reels, carousel posts and seemingly perfect lives showcased on platforms like Instagram and Facebook can fuel feelings of inadequacy, envy, and discontentment.
As followers of Christ, we are called to approach social media with discernment and wisdom. While these platforms can serve as valuable tools for connection and communication, they also present significant risks if not used responsibly. Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV) admonishes us to “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” This includes guarding our hearts against the pitfalls of comparison and envy that social media can breed.
Instead of succumbing to the pressure to conform to worldly standards of success and beauty, we are called to find our identity and worth in Christ alone. Galatians 6:4 (NKJV) reminds us, “But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.” Our worth is not determined by the number of likes or followers we have but by our relationship with God and the character we exhibit in our daily lives.
Let us use social media as a platform to glorify God rather than ourselves, seeking to uplift and encourage others rather than fostering envy or self-promotion. Let us use social media as a tool for change; win souls, initiate meaningful conversations, mentor growing talents and promote the kingdom of God. By cultivating an attitude of gratitude and contentment, we can overcome the temptation to compare ourselves to others and find fulfilment in Christ alone.
Insight: As believers, we must guard our hearts against the culture of comparison and seek to glorify God in all of our online interactions.
Prayer: Lord, grant me the wisdom to use social media responsibly and purposefully, seeking to glorify You in all that we do.
