The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom, and before honor is humility.
– Proverbs 15:33, NKJV
We live in a world where prominence, power and prestige are better celebrated but servant leadership is an orphan virtue. We forget that at the heart of servant leadership is the example set by Jesus Christ. In talking about character-driven leadership, humility is one of its hallmarks.
Jesus, despite being God, humbled Himself and took on the form of a servant, washed His disciples’ feet and ultimately sacrificed His life for the redemption of humanity. His life exemplified the transformative power of humility in leadership.
Humility in leadership is not a weakness but a strength. Leaders who embrace humility are secure in their identity and purpose, allowing them to lead with authenticity and grace. They prioritize the needs of others above their own, seeking to empower and uplift those they serve rather than seeking personal glory or recognition.
On a final note, humility is essential for effective character development. It cultivates self-awareness, empathy, and a willingness to learn from others. Leaders who humbly acknowledge their limitations and mistakes are open to growth and development, continuously striving to become better versions of themselves.
Insight: Humility is the pathway to honour, and true greatness is found in serving others with a humble heart.
Prayer: Abba Father, as I follow the example of Jesus Christ, grant me the wisdom and grace to lead with humility, compassion, and integrity, reflecting Your love to the world. Amen.
