And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit.
– Ephesians 5:18, NKJV
To be filled with the Holy Spirit is not a one-time event but a continual process – a process that empowers us to live victoriously as Christians. There are many things that one can get filled with. The Apostle Paul used wine in contrast. Being drunk with wine can lead to addiction and this is why Paul said instead of being addicted to wine, be addicted instead to the Holy Spirit.
A person filled with the Holy Spirit experiences growth. Such a person produces the fruit of the Spirit. The Apostle Paul tells us in Galatians that the manifestation of the Spirit is the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22) Not only that, but a person filled with the Holy Spirit is empowered. The Spirit of God empowers us for effective service. Jesus said when the Holy Spirit comes upon us, we will be effective witnesses of the gospel (Acts 1:8)
When we are filled with the Spirit of God, we experience a new level of relationship. Our intimacy with God deepens. We are able to enjoy His presence, we can hear His voice, we feel His love, and we are able to understand His will. We are empowered to navigate life. We receive clarity for making the right decisions that align with God’s will. I believe being filled with the Holy Spirit trumps any other experience. It takes a person who yields to God to have this great experience.
Insight: Being filled with the Holy Spirit is essential for spiritual empowerment, growth, guidance, and intimacy with God.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, fill me afresh today and empower me to live a life that glorifies You.
